1. Fill your gas tank all the way to “F” and reset your trip odometer. Alternatively, you can note the exact mileage after you finish filling. You’ll need to be aware of what your tank capacity is, which should be in your owner’s manual. 
2. Drive as you would on a normal day. It’s worth noting that if you use the gas pedal more than you typically would on an average commute, you might not get your standard gas mileage. 
3. After driving for a while, refill your tank to “F” and note the gas mileage. The longer you wait to refill, the more accurate the reading is because you’ll have data that includes a balanced mix of driving conditions. 
4. The simplest way to calculate your gas mileage is to divide the number of miles you traveled by the number of gallons it took to refill your vehicle. (Miles driven divided by gallons of gas consumed).

If you forgot to write down how many gallons it took to fill your car, you could calculate by where the tank was when you refilled (¼ tank, ½ tank, ⅛ tank, etc.) Divide this by your tank capacity to arrive at the number of gallons it took to refill. Then, divide your total miles driven by this estimate. It will be less accurate, but it’s better than starting the process over again.
