If you’re looking for a new car to drive through Brooklyn roads, you’ve probably heard about the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles. They’re a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and help the environment. But with the variety of terms thrown around, it can be confusing to understand what is what. That’s why we decided to give you something to reference when doing your research.
The difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles is centered around the size of the engine and how it’s powered. In a hybrid vehicle, the gas engine and electric battery work together to provide power. The gas engine provides the charge for the medium-sized electrical battery. However, in a plug-in hybrid vehicle, the much larger electrical battery is charged with an external charging unit. When driving a plug-in hybrid, you’ll notice that it will start off using electrical power and switch to gas when appropriate. Learn more about hybrid vs. plug-in hybrid vehicles below!
Now that you know the main difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrids, let’s look at the benefits of both. When driving a traditional hybrid vehicle through Staten Island, it will feel very familiar. It’s perfect if you’re new to the concept of electric vehicles. You’ll get the benefit of increased fuel efficiency while keeping the familiarity of a traditional gas-powered vehicle. It also offers convenience as you won’t have to worry about stopping to charge your electric battery.
While plug-in hybrid cars include a gas engine as well as an electric battery, it relies mostly on the electric battery, making them different from traditional hybrid models. When commuting to Queens, the engine and battery work separately. The gas engine will serve as a backup generator, powering the vehicle when the electrical charge runs out. To recharge the battery, you’ll have to stop to plug in your vehicle. Charging units are becoming more public as you’ll find them at local grocery stores and even some apartment complexes.
